Spirit in the Land is a traveling exhibition that explores the profound ties between cultural identity, land, and water. My work, From a Garden of Hope, continues its journey now situated in the Perez Art Museum Miami, which thoughtfully addresses the ecological challenges we face today.

This series reflects my ongoing engagement with the Scotland District of Barbados—a region steeped in history yet in a constant state of transformation. Each drawing in the collection overlays delicate hand-drawn contour lines from a geological survey with renderings of wild botanicals. These plants, gathered from Walkers’ Reserve, are often overlooked yet thrive in the sandy soils of this transitioning landscape.

What began as an effort to preserve these plants in a small herbarium has become a practice of observing and caring for the land—a counter-mapmaking exercise that resists the extractive legacy of plantation economies. For me, these drawings are not just meditations on the flora of Walkers Reserve, but also on how we might reconnect with the landscapes we inhabit in regenerative ways.

The title, From a Garden of Hope, gestures toward the possibility of healing, both ecological and cultural, through mindful engagement with the land.

Spirit in the Land, as a whole, celebrates nature’s beauty while grappling with its degradation. It amplifies the voices of communities most affected by these environmental shifts and challenges us to reimagine the natural world as a site of resilience, memory, and renewal.

I’m grateful to contribute to this collective conversation and to stand alongside artists whose work seeks to inspire change.
